Skin infection with Mycobacterium marinum from a tropical fish tank.

چکیده
Opportunist acid-fast bacilli sometimes cause progressive indolent infections of the skin, producing nodules, granulomatous lesions, abscesses, or ulcers. Some of these mycobacteria prefer temperatures lower than 370C for growth, and minor trauma or devitalized tissue probably aid their entry and establishment. One such organism, Mycobacterium marinum (balnei), was identified as the cause of epidemic cutaneous lesions among swimming-pool bathers in Sweden (Linell and Norden, 1954) and later in Britain (Morgan and Blowers, 1964; Waddington, 1967). It is pathogenic for fish, and sporadic human infection attributed to this source was first reported by Swift and Cohen (1962). We describe a further case of a patient with spreading cutaneous lesions caused by infection with Myco. marinum from a tropical fish tank.

Nasal Fish Tank Granuloma: An Uncommon Cause for Epistaxis
An immunocompetent 28-year-old male aquarium store employee presented with 1 month of intermittent epistaxis. A bleeding granulomatous lesion was identified over the right nasal septum ( Figure 1 ). Histopathology from the incisional biopsy revealed granulomatous inflammation with the presence of acid-fast bacilli ( Figure 2 ). Culture of the homogenized specimen on Middlebrook 7H11 agar after ...
متن کاملFish Tank Granuloma Caused by Mycobacterium marinum in Two Aquarists: Two Case Reports
Mycobacterium marinum, the cause of chronic systemic infections in fish, occasionally causes granulomatous skin and soft tissue lesions in humans. Cutaneous mycobacterial infection in two patients owing to unusual circumstances is presented in this report. The first patient was infected through improper hygienic behavior, while infection in the second patient was previously misdiagnosed as rheu...
متن کاملMycobacterium marinum causing tenosynovitis. 'Fish tank finger'.
Mycobacterium marinum is an unusual atypical mycobacterium with low pathogenicity for humans in comparison with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Among the non-tuberculous mycobacterial pathogens, Mycobacterium marinum is the most common pathogen to cause skin infections. Mycobacterium marinum infection causes chronic cutaneous lesions and in some cases deeper infections such as tenosynovitis, septic...
متن کاملگزارش یک مورد Fish tank granuloma
Fish tank or swimming granuloma caused by Mycobacterium marinum is an opportunist pathogen commonly found in aquatic environments. We present a 16 year-old boy with frequent exposure to aquarium water who had several nodules (sprotrichoid forms) on his right hand. Pervious studies showed that fish tank granuloma is a rare skin infection (0.27 per 100,000 population in one year). However, t...
متن کاملReview of Mycobacterium marinum Infection Reported From Iran and Report of Three New Cases With Sporotrichoid Presentation
INTRODUCTION Mycobacterium marinum infection is the most common nontuberculous mycobacterial skin lesions. It results from skin injury and contact with contaminated water, fish, or shellfish; its infections have low frequency, nonspecific symptoms and lack of specific identification methods that can alter correct diagnosis. This study designed about cases that reported from Iran and comparing th...
